Honoring Our Elders is a grassroots community effort. Our mission is to increase awareness and enhance the quality of life for elders living alone and in senior and long-term care facilities.
Silver Stocking provides Christmas gifts and visits to elders in assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Often times these elders are forgotten during the holidays. We are given names of elders without family members or visitors by the facility administrator along with their suggested gift items. In 2005 we visited 138 elders, 203 in 2006, and 627 in 2007.
The Valentine Red Heart Box program is a volunteer program that is a sister program to the Silver Stocking program. It was developed in direct response to comments made by many seniors who identified Valentine's Day as one of the loneliest times of the year. To address this need, volunteers decorate the Valentine Red Heart Boxes or Bags and place a small handmade craft and other items inside. Volunteers deliver these boxes to seniors on Valentine's Day letting them know that they are not forgotten.
June is Imagination Vacation month. A small suitcase is presented packed with imagination vacation materials. Sometimes to get in the vacation spirit, the resident has his or her picture taken for a "passport." Long after you are gone the residents can reminisce about the sights, sounds, and tastes they experienced on their imagination vacation.
Celebrate Freedom is held in July. The residents are given small flags and local churches and civic organizations perform mini-concerts.
Fall Flower Power is designed to brighten the sometimes dreary fall days for residents. Small-personalized flowerpots are given to the residents.
